Since starting Love, Maisie(then The Life of Maisie) back in 2013, I have never really had a proper working space. A space that is solely for writing and working on my blog and other projects. Sure, I’ve used my bed as an office(not in a dirty way, obvs) the coffee table, the dinning table, the floor and of course, the sofa, but there’s just something that makes me feel 100% more productive if I sit at a desk to get my stuff done. So of course, I bought myself a desk and have created my very own office space in the corner of mine and Jack’s bedroom.
Just a quick note: I wouldn’t really recommend having a work space/office in your bedroom as I would personally prefer to keep the bedroom for relaxing and sleeping, but our home is now home to a tiny human too so the spare room is now his nursery and our lounge is full to the brim with baby toys.. so this quiet corner seemed like my next best bet. But again, if you can avoid working in the bedroom then I highly suggest so.
Let’s talk about the actual desk first. I bought this desk second hand(for about £10) from a family friend and simply bought some marble(#bloggergoals bite me) sticky vinyl from Wilko’s(£4) and placed it on the top of the desk and over the draw. I personally think this makes my desk look way more expensive than it is and definitely gave it the new lease of life that it needed. If you’re wanting to up-cycle your current desk, this is a really cheap and easy way to do so. The sticky vinyl is available pretty much anywhere these days and there are so many designs to choose from.
Next up, my aesthetically pleasing computer. Now, I didn’t just buy my computer because it was white, although that is a bonus, but mainly was in my budget and had all the capabilities that I needed from a computer. I don’t think I will ever be able to justify the money for a Mac or a Macbook (despite how bloody handsome they are) and I’m fine with that. My HP is my baby and it’s the place where I have all my ideas and creations and having a computer on a desk that I can’t move around the house(I could if I wanted to but I would still need somewhere sturdy to place it to use it) really helps with my productivity as I can’t get side tracked by the TV or talking to Jack.
I have some of the books that I spoke about recently in this blog post on my desk for two reasons. It serves as a reminder to me that these are on my to read list and also that they look pretty, right?! Underneath the draw on my desk are some shelves which is where I keep things like paperwork and notebooks as they can look unsightly as I have so many in so many different styles and colours.
Above my desk I have some inspiration, including photos, cards and prints by some amazingly talented artists! The Blog Life and Home Sweet Home(not visible in photo) print are both by the lovely Jemma of Dorkface, you can shop her Etsy here and the two woodland prints are by the wonderful Forest Mama Designs which you can shop here. One of my favourite little things up there is the New Baby Guide card from my lovely friends Jade and Julia. It always makes me giggle when I see it. I still have plenty of things that I need to add to my little wall so maybe I’ll do an updated desk space post at some point if you fancy it?
Of course, I also have some staples like a succulent(obviously an essential), my pen pot(which is actually a plant pot from B&M), my diary and to-do lists and a candle.. again, essentials!
I really have seen a huge improvement in my productivity since I created this space to work at. In fact, so much so that I’m not posting three times a week here on my blog and three times a week over on my YouTube channel too! I hope this spell of productiveness lasts! If you’re sitting at your dinning room table getting your work done or sat in your bed, slippers on and getting through that assignment, then stop right now and plan how you can create your own work space too! But keep the slippers on.. definitely keep them on(comfort over everything).
Do you have a dedicated office/working space in your home? I’d love to know and to see some photos too!
